Jane Austen was born December 16th, 1775 at Steventon, Hampshire, England. She was the seventh child out of eight and the second daughter out of two. Her parents were Reverend George Austen(1731-1805), he was the local Church of England clergyman, and his wife Cassandra(1739-1827). Jane Austen was educated at home mostly by her father until leaving for boarding school with her older sister Cassandra in early 1783. They went briefly to be taught by a Mrs. Cawley (the sister of one of their uncles), who lived first in Oxford and then moved to Southampton. Stephenie Meyer was born December 24, 1973 in Connecticut. Her family settled in Phoenix by the time she was four, and she still resides in Arizona. The unusual spelling of her name was given to her by her father, Stephen (Stephen + ie). Stephenie is the second of three girls; Emily and Heidi and she also has three brothers younger than herself and her sisters; Jacob, Paul, and Seth. She went to high school in Scottsdale, Arizona and was awarded a National Merit Scholarship, which she used to pay her way through Brigham Young University, in Provo, Utah. She majored in English, but concentrated on literature rather than creative writing, mostly because she didn’t consider reading books “work”. (more…)
Fahrentheit 451 is a dystopian soft science fiction novel by Ray Bradbury and was first published in 1953. It is a critique of what Bradbury saw as an increasingly dysfunctional American society, written in the early years of the Cold War. The plot is very original and ironic. The novel has often been thought of as provoking and makes you question your own knowledge and freedoms of modern life. (more…)
Studying a foreign language can improve your cognitive and critical thinking abilities. And three years of language study on your record will catch the eye of anyone reading your college application. No matter what your career choice, knowledge of a foreign language gives you an advantage. Learning about other cultures will help you expand your personal horizons. The People to People Student Ambassador Program is an organization based in Spokane, Washington, that offers educational international travel opportunities to elementary, middle, and high school students. The program itself is not non-profit, however it is one of the sponsored programs of People to People International which is a non-profit organization. The mission of this program is to “promote peace through understanding,” in the words of Dwight D. Eisenhower. (more…)
The Grand Canyon National Park is one of the United States’ oldest national parks and is located in northern Arizona. Within the park lies the Grand Canyon, a gorge of the Colorado River, considered to be one of the major natural wonders of the world. The Grand Canyon is a massive rift in the Colorado Plateau that exposes uplifted Proterozoic and Paleozoic strata and is also one of the six distinct physiographic sections of the Colorado Plateau province.
